[Taboleo] Electric? Gasoline? Only the Advantages Combined!…The Ultimate PHEV BMW 530e
PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid) BMW New 530e Captures Both Power and Fuel Efficiency
Combining the Quietness of Electric Cars with the Speed of Internal Combustion Engines
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] The BMW 5 Series consistently ranks among the top sellers in the domestic imported car market. This reflects the strong affection Korean consumers have for the BMW 5 Series. Among the BMW 5 Series lineup, there has recently been growing interest in the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) model, the new (NEW) 530e.
PHEV refers to a hybrid vehicle that uses both an engine and an electric motor but can also be charged from an external power source. Unlike conventional hybrid vehicles that only store electricity generated by their own engine and generator, PHEVs can receive power externally, offering the advantage of higher fuel efficiency.
It is no exaggeration to say that PHEVs have significantly contributed to the rising popularity of eco-friendly vehicles, which are currently a major trend. According to the Korea Imported Automobile Dealers Association (KAIDA), the BMW New 530e ranked third among all imported car models with 703 units sold in June.
The BMW New 530e, a PHEV that combines the power of an internal combustion engine with the efficiency of an electric vehicle, is regarded as a stepping stone toward the full-fledged electric vehicle era expected in the coming years. We test drove the BMW New 530e, the first PHEV model in the 5 Series, on Seoul’s Jayu-ro and around Paju City in Gyeonggi Province.
-What was your first impression?
△The BMW New 530e shares the same exterior as the BMW New 5 Series. At first glance, it is difficult to spot major differences from the regular 5 Series. The 530e badge on the trunk and the additional battery charging socket on the side indicate that this is a PHEV model.
However, since the design of the BMW New 5 Series itself is outstanding, satisfaction with the vehicle’s design was high. The 7th generation New 5 Series is 27 mm longer than the previous model, securing a spacious interior and a sleeker appearance.
Additionally, the front features the signature kidney grille integrated into a single frame and adaptive LED headlights with ‘L’-shaped daytime running lights, giving it a dynamic look.
Thanks to its excellent design, the 7th generation 5 Series has maintained BMW’s reputation, selling a total of 77,000 units domestically over the past four years since its release.
-How did it feel to drive it yourself?
△The New 530e can be described as a car that perfectly blends the advantages of electric vehicles and internal combustion engine vehicles. When I first started the engine sitting in the driver’s seat, I felt the quietness characteristic of electric cars. Since electric vehicles run on motors, there is no engine noise, so first-time drivers may not even realize the engine has started; the New 530e was no different.
The New 530e is equipped with a high-voltage lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 12.0 kWh, allowing it to travel up to 45 km on a single charge. It can also reach a top speed of 140 km/h in pure electric mode.
During low-speed driving such as city driving, it runs on electricity, while at high speeds it uses fuel, allowing you to experience the power of an internal combustion engine vehicle. In actual city driving, it was as quiet as a pure electric vehicle, with only the low hum of the electric motor filling the ears.
-How does it compare to internal combustion engine cars?
△Since the New 530e uses the engine at high speeds, the driving feel is not much different from that of a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle. What was particularly impressive was how quietly and naturally the transition to the engine occurred as the speed increased.
The switch from electric driving to engine driving was so smooth that you could hardly tell the change had happened. Some hybrid vehicles have been criticized for noise and poor driving feel during this transition, but this car showed no such drawbacks. BMW Korea explained that this reflects their extensive efforts to eliminate the awkwardness, a common downside of plug-in hybrids.
At high speeds, the distinctive dynamic feel of BMW was fully expressed. The acceleration was powerful the moment you pressed the pedal, and the stability during cornering was excellent. The New 530e accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. It combines a 4-cylinder gasoline engine producing a maximum output of 184 horsepower with an electric motor providing up to 109 horsepower, delivering a total maximum power of 292 horsepower.
-Was the fuel efficiency outstanding?
△The greatest advantage of PHEVs seems to be fuel efficiency. Since I mostly drove at low speeds in the city, I used electric mode, resulting in zero fuel consumption. On the stretch from Jayu-ro to Paju in Gyeonggi Province, I mainly used fuel, but the combined fuel efficiency exceeded 20 km/L, demonstrating excellent efficiency. If used only for commuting between home and office on weekdays, it would be possible to operate solely on electricity without refueling gasoline, significantly reducing fuel costs. Additional benefits include a 50% discount at nationwide public parking lots and congestion charge exemptions.
-How was the interior space?
△The interior space was sufficient for a family of four. It is a good size for daily commuting and weekend trips with family. There were concerns that the rear seats might be cramped, but those who sat in the back said they did not feel the space was tight. There was ample legroom and headroom, so people of average build would not feel uncomfortable.
One downside is the trunk space. Since hybrid vehicles need to accommodate the electric battery, the trunk space inevitably shrinks. This car’s trunk was slightly smaller compared to a regular sedan. However, it is still large enough to fit golf bags or travel luggage, so it does not pose a significant inconvenience for everyday use.

△The interior of the New 530e retains the luxurious BMW feel. The long dashboard, digital instrument cluster, steering wheel, and console are basically similar to those of the BMW 5 Series. However, a new eDrive button was added next to the gear lever, and the eDrive mode display allowed various vehicle information to be viewed at a glance. Advanced driver assistance features such as active cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and parking assistant are standard. The price is in the low 80 million KRW range.
