[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] As the spread of COVID-19 continues to intensify domestically, the number of new confirmed cases surged to the 1,800 range on the 7th for the first time in ten days.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on the 7th, there were 1,823 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the cumulative total to 209,228.
This is an increase of 119 cases from the previous day's 1,704, marking the first time in ten days that the number has risen back into the 1,800 range since the highest record of 1,895 cases on the 28th of last month. This is the third largest scale following the 28th and the 22nd of the same month (1,841 cases).
Looking at recent trends, the fourth large wave that began mainly in the Seoul metropolitan area is spreading nationwide as it extends to various non-metropolitan areas. Although the highest current level of social distancing, Level 4, has been applied in the metropolitan area and Level 3 in non-metropolitan areas for two weeks, the infection spread has not decreased.
The daily number of confirmed cases has recorded four digits for 32 consecutive days, starting from 1,212 cases on the 7th of last month.
From the 1st of this month to the 7th, the daily new confirmed cases over the past week were 1,442 → 1,218 → 1,200 → 1,725 → 1,704 → 1,823. With an average of 1,555 cases per day over the week, the key indicator for adjusting social distancing levels, the average daily number of locally transmitted cases, reached 1,495.
Regarding the infection routes of new confirmed cases, 1,762 were locally transmitted and 61 were imported cases. By region, the Seoul metropolitan area recorded over 1,000 cases with Gyeonggi at 514, Seoul at 503, and Incheon at 90. Considering only local transmissions, Gyeonggi had 501, Seoul 498, and Incheon 90, totaling 1,089 cases (61.8%).
In non-metropolitan areas, local confirmed cases totaled 673, with Busan at 144, Gyeongnam at 130, Daegu at 66, and Daejeon at 57, maintaining the 600-range for four consecutive days since the 4th.
Imported cases numbered 61, three fewer than the previous day (64). Among these, 25 were identified during quarantine at airports or ports, while the rest tested positive during self-isolation in local residences or temporary living facilities.
The death toll increased by three from the previous day, reaching a cumulative total of 2,116. The domestic average fatality rate stands at 1.01%. The total number of critically ill patients is 377, and 1,737 patients were released from isolation on this day, bringing the cumulative total to 183,789.
Meanwhile, the number of new COVID-19 vaccine recipients on the previous day was 254,372, bringing the total number of people who have completed the first dose to 20,786,192, which corresponds to 40.5% of the total population.

Reports of suspected adverse reactions following vaccination increased by 5,449 over three days. Among these, nine additional death reports were made, but causality between vaccination and death has not yet been confirmed.
