On the 3rd, Mayor Heo Tae-jung of Daejeon announced this COVID-19 response plan during an online briefing.
Mayor Heo stated, "Daejeon is currently implementing the strongest Level 4 social distancing measures among non-metropolitan areas," but added, "However, the COVID-19 spread situation is very serious, with a total of 1,591 confirmed cases (37% of all cases) occurring in the past month."
He expressed particular concern, saying, "Among last month's confirmed cases, 88 out of 100 were confirmed to be infected with the Delta variant, and cluster infections are spreading in everyday places such as families, workplaces, and academies."
In response, Mayor Heo announced, "Considering the spread of COVID-19 in the region, the city plans to reduce city bus and subway operations by 50% after 10 p.m. from the 5th until the end of Level 4 social distancing to minimize citizen movement."
Mayor Heo also recommended proactive PCR testing for people in their 20s and 30s. He said, "Recently, a majority of new confirmed cases in the region are young people in their 20s and 30s who are highly active, raising concerns about secondary infections. We recommend that young people get PCR tests at screening clinics, and the city plans to focus guidance activities at places where young people mainly gather."
He added, "The city will mobilize all administrative resources and cooperate with citizens throughout this month to overcome COVID-19 and reduce the number of confirmed cases in the region to below 30, which corresponds to Level 2 social distancing. We urge citizens to refrain from private gatherings, travel, and exchanges with other regions for the time being and to participate in basic preventive measures such as wearing masks."
Meanwhile, since the upgrade to Level 4 social distancing on the 27th of last month, Daejeon has recorded a total of 526 new confirmed cases over one week. This means an average of 75.1 new cases were confirmed daily.
