Haenam-gun Selected as 'Best Institution' in Wildfire Prevention and Response Evaluation
Achieving Zero Spring Wildfires: Successful Community-Wide Participation in Wildfire Prevention Activities
[Haenam=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do (County Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan) was selected as the best institution in the 2021 Spring Wildfire Prevention and Response Evaluation hosted by Jeollanam-do.
According to the county on the 29th, this evaluation, conducted on 22 cities and counties in the province, comprehensively assessed wildfire-related tasks in nine areas including spring wildfire prevention, wildfire response capability, and wildfire prevention cooperation.
Haenam-gun declared this year as the inaugural year of "Zero Preventable Burning Wildfires," and it was confirmed that no wildfires occurred until May 31, the end of the spring caution period.
Additionally, the campaign to create green villages without burning wildfires, involving all 514 villages, and non-face-to-face wildfire prevention education visits were conducted, raising residents' awareness of wildfires and focusing all efforts on prevention, which received high praise.
Before the start of the wildfire-prone spring season, the county fixed wildfire prevention and suppression teams in towns and townships, operated mobile crackdowns on illegal burning activities and drone surveillance teams, and actively promoted through village broadcasts to prohibit burning of field ridges and other resident awareness activities.
Furthermore, wildfire prevention education for all employees, civil-government cooperative wildfire zero campaigns, and distinctive campaigns such as non-face-to-face wildfire prevention education for elementary, middle, and high school students in the area were recognized as excellent cases.
Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan said, "This selection as the best institution is thanks to the interest and efforts of all public officials, wildfire prevention and suppression team members, and residents to prevent wildfires," and added, "We will do our best to raise awareness of the importance of forests in the post-COVID era and prevent wildfires."
Meanwhile, in 2021, Haenam-gun had the highest number of six villages selected as green villages without burning wildfires by the Korea Forest Service, and Yoon Jae-hong, the head of Yongsan Village in Okcheon-myeon, who actively participated in the green village campaign, was honored with a commendation from the Korea Forest Service Director.
