US Secretary of State Meets with Senior Official of Tibetan Government-in-Exile to 'Check China'
Unusual Meeting... Blinken Posts Photo on SNS
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken held a brief meeting with a senior official of the Tibetan government-in-exile, major foreign media reported on the 28th.
According to reports, Secretary Blinken met briefly with Ngodup Dongchung, the representative of the spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, along with Indian civil society figures in New Delhi, India, on the same day.
Ngodup Dongchung serves as the Dalai Lama's representative, responsible for negotiations and contacts with the Indian central government, various foreign diplomats, and multiple non-governmental organizations. As such, this is considered the highest-level meeting between the two sides since President Barack Obama met with the Dalai Lama in 2016.
Reflecting this, Secretary Blinken posted images of his meeting with officials from the Tibetan government-in-exile on his social media (SNS) that day.
Although the details of the conversation during this meeting were not disclosed, the dominant interpretation is that the United States, which has been highlighting Tibetan human rights issues amid the U.S.-China conflict, used this opportunity to send a warning to China.

Since the Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959 and established the Tibetan government-in-exile, China has taken a sensitive stance, labeling him a "separatist." As tensions between the two countries have intensified, the U.S. has also raised its offensive level by directly addressing Tibetan human rights issues.
