Lee Jae-myung Orders Emergency Quarantine Measures for 'Ansan Banwol Industrial Complex and Others' with 109 Confirmed Cases
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung dispatched Vice Governor Lee Yong-cheol to the site and took emergency quarantine measures after a total of 109 COVID-19 cases (62 foreigners, 57%) were confirmed over two days from the 26th to the 27th, mainly at foreign workplaces including Banwol Industrial Complex in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province.
Gyeonggi Province announced that Vice Governor Lee Yong-cheol inspected two temporary screening clinics near Banwol Industrial Complex on the 28th and decided to open three additional temporary screening clinics from the 29th: two in Ansan City and one in Siheung City.
The temporary screening clinics are located in two places with high accessibility for foreign workers: the parking lot of the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation Gyeonggi Regional Headquarters in Ansan City and the plaza next to the Ansan Foreign Resident Support Center. Additionally, a temporary screening clinic will be set up at Hope Park in Siheung City.
As a result, the number of temporary screening clinics in the province will increase from 67 to 70.
The province previously dispatched five epidemiological investigators to Ansan City to conduct epidemiological investigations and contact classification, and through consultations with the Ministry of National Defense, urgently supported 36 administrative support military personnel.
Ansan City is considering opening a separate living treatment center exclusively for foreigners.
The province is also considering including workers at foreign employment workplaces within the industrial complex in the COVID-19 voluntary vaccination target group to ensure rapid vaccination for foreign workers at high risk of transmission.
Governor Lee Jae-myung of Gyeonggi Province emphasized, "Given the characteristics of Ansan City, where many foreign workers reside, if infection is not blocked early, it could lead to an uncontrollable situation. Gyeonggi Province will work with Ansan City and others with vigilance in this emergency situation to fully prevent the spread of community infection."
Meanwhile, Danwon-gu in Ansan City and Siheung City issued an administrative order on the same day requiring business owners and workers at workplaces with fewer than 50 employees, including at least one foreign worker, in Banwol and Siwha National Industrial Complex and Siwha MTV to undergo proactive COVID-19 testing regardless of nationality.
According to the administrative order, workers at the relevant workplaces must visit screening clinics or temporary screening clinics to receive COVID-19 PCR diagnostic tests from the 29th of this month until the 7th of next month.
