Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced on the 28th that it secured the main construction project for the new passenger terminal at Chinchero International Airport in Peru, a follow-up to the site preparation work won earlier this year. The company is participating as the leader of a joint venture (J/V) composed of global firms from Mexico, China, and others (Sinohydro, ICA, HV Contatistas).
This project, commissioned by the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Peru, is valued at approximately 493 billion KRW (428 million USD), with Hyundai Engineering & Construction holding a 35% stake, amounting to about 172.5 billion KRW.
The construction of the new terminal at Chinchero Airport involves building an airport capable of accommodating 5.7 million passengers annually in Chinchero city, located 15 km northwest of Cusco, the gateway to the world-renowned Inca cultural heritage site, Machu Picchu.
The airport facilities will include a terminal building, control tower, runway, and apron, all constructed as state-of-the-art eco-friendly airport facilities. The construction period is 47 months (with a total contract period of 63 months including defect liability), and the project will be executed using a fast-track method that allows simultaneous design and construction.
After the bid closed in April, Hyundai Engineering & Construction topped both the technical and commercial evaluation categories, surpassing competing teams from Spain and Italy.

In line with the airport’s status as the gateway to the world-famous tourist destination Machu Picchu, the project will apply advanced design techniques such as BIM (Building Information Modelling) to digitize the entire process from design and construction to maintenance. Through 3D architectural modeling, the project aims to differentiate design, shorten construction time, reduce costs, and maximize energy-saving efficiency.
Notably, the Project Management Office (PMO), responsible for overall project management including design review, construction progress and quality control, and commissioning on behalf of the Peruvian government, is being handled by Team Korea?comprising Korea Airports Corporation, HanmiGlobal, and others?under a 2019 government-to-government (G2G) contract. This marks a significant milestone as all construction work is now being carried out entirely by Korean companies.
A Hyundai Engineering & Construction official stated, "Despite the global economic downturn caused by COVID-19, our outstanding construction technology and expertise were recognized, allowing us to surpass European competitors and win the main construction contract. Through this contract, we aim to continue securing projects such as the $4 billion Lima Metro construction project."
