South and North Korean Leaders Reach Consensus on Swift Restoration of Relations for Peace on the Korean Peninsula
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] The Blue House remained reserved about the possibility of a video summit between the South and North Korean leaders, stating that "there has been no discussion" on the matter.
A senior Blue House official explained on the 27th regarding the background of the restoration of inter-Korean communication lines, "The two leaders shared concerns about the prolonged severance of inter-Korean relations and agreed on the need for a swift restoration of relations and rebuilding of trust for peace on the Korean Peninsula."
In particular, the senior Blue House official stated, "There has been no consultation regarding face-to-face contact between the South and North Korean leaders," and "there has been no discussion about a video summit between the two leaders."
It was explained that the letters exchanged between the South and North Korean leaders were mutually exchanged around the 3rd anniversary of the inter-Korean summit at Panmunjom last April. The senior Blue House official described the content of the communication between the two Koreas as messages of early overcoming and consolation regarding COVID-19 and heavy rain situations, as well as dialogues about peace on the Korean Peninsula and improvement of inter-Korean relations.
Additionally, the Blue House senior official added, "The two leaders exchanged consolation and concerns with each other, urging a swift overcoming of the prolonged suffering caused by COVID-19 affecting both South and North Korea," and "each leader also conveyed consolation and greetings to their compatriots in the South and North, respectively."

Meanwhile, the senior Blue House official stated regarding the possibility of reducing or canceling the August South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises, "there was no special consideration regarding the timing of the restoration of communication lines, and the restoration of communication lines is unrelated to the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises," adding, "We will continue to make steady efforts to improve inter-Korean relations."
