5th Term Broadcast Communications Commission's First Meeting... 168,000 Pending Agenda Items
6 out of 7 Appointed Members Attended
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] After many twists and turns, six members of the 5th Broadcasting and Communications Review Committee, launched after six months, held their first meeting on the 26th at the Broadcasting Hall in Mok-dong, Seoul.
This was the first meeting since seven members of the 5th committee were appointed on the 23rd of this month. Except for member Hwang Seong-wook, members Kim Yoo-jin, Ok Si-chan, Yoon Sung-ok, Lee Kwang-bok, Jung Min-young, and Jung Yeon-ju attended.
The six members received a report from the secretariat on the status of pending broadcasting and communications review cases accumulated during the recent six-month vacancy period. During this period, a total of 168,389 cases were pending, including 9,396 broadcasting cases and 158,993 communications cases. This also included 7,608 cases related to digital sex crime information.
The members pointed out that the delayed launch of the 5th committee has caused setbacks in forming the Election Broadcasting Review Committee for the upcoming 20th presidential election. They also expressed concern over the surge of serious complaints regarding inappropriate expressions in recent Olympic broadcasts. In particular, they highlighted the suffering of victims and their families due to the 7,608 digital sex crime cases remaining unprocessed and demanded prompt measures.
The Review Committee also mentioned that the previous 4th committee, after about a seven-month vacancy, held subcommittee meetings more than twice a week to process approximately 170,000 cases, emphasizing the need for institutional improvements to prevent similar work gaps in the future. The 5th committee plans to hold weekly meetings to discuss work directions and other matters.

Meanwhile, seven members were appointed on the 23rd of this month, about six months after the end of the 4th committee’s term. Initially, the People Power Party had refused to recommend two members in protest against the appointment rumors of Jung Yeon-ju as the chairperson of the Broadcasting and Communications Review Committee, but on the 27th, the remaining two members are expected to be recommended at the full meeting of the National Assembly’s Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee. With the appointment of nine review committee members, the committee’s functions are expected to normalize.
