20,000 Two-Wheeled Vehicle Traffic Accidents Annually... Road Traffic Authority Distributes Safe Driving Guidelines for Delivery Workers
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Korea Road Traffic Authority (Chairman Lee Joo-min) announced on the 22nd that it has distributed motorcycle driving safety guidelines to delivery workers, urging them to drive safely as the use of motorcycle delivery services increases.
Looking at motorcycle traffic accident statistics over the past five years (2016?2020), the number of traffic accidents had been decreasing until 2018, but in 2019, the number of accidents increased by 18.7% compared to the previous year, exceeding 20,000 cases. Last year, it increased by another 1.7%, recording 21,258 accidents.
The Authority views one of the reasons for the rise in motorcycle traffic accidents as the increase in motorcycle operations due to the growing demand for delivery services, and plans to strengthen education and promotional activities to ensure the safety of motorcycle delivery workers.
On the 15th of this month, a campaign was held to promote a "motorcycle safe driving culture" through safe driving by motorcycle delivery workers and encouraging consumers to place orders with ample time. To help motorcycle delivery workers understand and comply with safe driving rules, card news and poster guides were produced and will be provided for use at motorcycle delivery workplaces in the future.
At the Authority’s e-learning center (trafficedu.koroad.or.kr) under the ‘Educational Materials’ section, motorcycle traffic safety videos, leaflets for youth, drivers, and non-drivers, as well as safety guide educational materials for elderly drivers and professional drivers can be downloaded. Additionally, in cooperation with local governments such as Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, customized practical training reflecting the characteristics of delivery workers will be organized to conduct traffic safety education for motorcycle safe driving within this year.

Im Ui-cheol, Director of Education Operations at the Authority, stated, "Since motorcycles have no protective devices to safeguard the driver in the event of an accident, it can lead to severe damage, so special attention must be paid to safe driving practices such as obeying traffic signals and maintaining a constant speed." He added, "The Authority will expand education for delivery workers and motorcycle drivers and carry out various activities to prevent traffic accidents."
