"Inauguration 6 Months Cabinet Meeting Defensive Stance...Remaining Term Indicates Challenges"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] On the 20th (local time), U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized cooperation among democratic countries, stating that "we are facing decisive competition with China and other countries."
On the same day marking exactly six months since his inauguration on January 20, President Biden presided over a cabinet meeting held in the White House Cabinet Room, saying, "Many countries believe they cannot compete with authoritarian regimes, but I completely reject that notion."
He also stated that the challenge of American leadership is to prove that democracy is more capable than autocratic rule, emphasizing that "America is back." Foreign media reported that he effectively identified China as an authoritarian state and expressed the determination that democratic countries must unite.
President Biden said, "There is still much to be done and many tasks ahead," adding, "The majority of the people agree on the essence of what we want to do, and therefore we must fulfill every promise. There is nothing America cannot do while we are together."
He also mentioned achievements so far, including economic recovery amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the restoration of U.S. leadership in the international community. He emphasized that the COVID-19 death rate has decreased by nearly 90% compared to its peak and that currently, almost all deaths are among the unvaccinated, stating that America is making progress.
He went on to say that in the six months since his inauguration, his administration has created 3 million jobs?more than any other administration in the same period?and added, "We can turn this great momentum into an economic boom." He also noted important agendas in other areas such as voting rights, immigration, police reform, and crime response.
CNN reported that "President Biden took a defensive approach regarding his achievements in the first six months," suggesting that there are still significant challenges to overcome during the remainder of his term. It cited major challenges including cyberattacks from Russia and China, the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan after U.S. troop withdrawal, inflation threats, and failure to block immigrant inflows at the border.
