Daejeon City Challenges to Host the '2026 World Solar Photovoltaic Academic Conference'
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City is challenging to host the ‘9th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion (WCPEC-9)’ scheduled for 2026.
According to the city on the 20th, the World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion is the largest international conference in the photovoltaic field held every four years, and Daejeon is the first city in South Korea to bid for hosting it.
Earlier, the city submitted a domestic bid in May and competed with four other cities?Daegu, Busan, Gwangju, and Jeju?and was selected last month as the final domestic host candidate (eligible to bid internationally).
Following this, the city will compete with Tokyo, Japan, and Shanghai, China, to host the World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion.
The hosting decision is scheduled to be made at the World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion held in Rome, Italy, in October next year.
If the city successfully hosts the World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion, about 2,000 photovoltaic-related industry, academia, research, and corporate stakeholders?including 1,500 from 40 overseas countries and 500 domestic participants?will gather in Daejeon in 2026. The city estimates the economic ripple effect, including direct and indirect impacts, to be approximately 13.3 billion KRW.
To secure the hosting rights for the World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion, the city plans to maintain cooperative relationships with the Korean Photovoltaic Society, Korea Institute of Energy Research, and Daejeon Marketing Corporation.
On this day, the city and the Korean Photovoltaic Society signed a business agreement to promote Daejeon’s bid to host the World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion.
At the end of this year, a delegation led by Kim Myung-soo, Deputy Mayor for Science of the city, will be dispatched to the Japan Photovoltaic Society to explain the justification for hosting the World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion in Korea (Daejeon) and will make every effort to secure the bid.
