Chungnam Special Crackdown on Illegal Occupation in Mountain Valleys During Summer Vacation Season
[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province announced on the 20th that it will conduct special crackdowns to eradicate illegal activities in major forests and valleys in the region during the summer vacation season.
The crackdown will focus on preventing illegal occupation, cooking, littering, and illegal harvesting of forest products at 50 famous mountains and hiking trails distributed across 15 cities and counties by organizing a mobile team of about 300 people until the end of next month.
The key crackdown items include ▲ illegal occupation and commercial activities in mountain valleys ▲ illegal activities related to hiking and camping ▲ illegal digging and harvesting of forest products such as moss and forest pollution ▲ habitual dumping and piling of household garbage and construction waste.
The province plans to take action according to relevant laws when illegal activities are detected. The relevant laws stipulate a fine of up to 1 million won for dumping waste or garbage in forests, and imprisonment of up to 5 years or a fine of up to 50 million won for illegally harvesting or damaging forest products such as wild vegetables and medicinal herbs.

A provincial official said, “As the number of visitors to the mountains has surged due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, cases of damage to forest resources are expected to increase. Through the crackdown, the province will establish a proper forest and recreational culture to pass on healthy forests to future generations.”
