US Court Rules DACA for Undocumented Youth Is 'Illegal'
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-seop] A U.S. court has ruled that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is illegal.
According to major foreign media including The Washington Post on the 18th, the federal district court in Texas viewed the DACA program as an excessive use of presidential administrative authority. However, it explained that the 650,000 people currently registered under DACA will maintain their benefits until a higher court ruling is made.
DACA is an immigration law that defers the deportation of minors who have entered or remain in the United States. It was created by former President Barack Obama and helps those who came to the U.S. following their parents to be able to work.
President Joe Biden criticized the ruling in a statement, calling it a "deeply disappointing decision" and saying it "threw hundreds of thousands of young immigrants into an uncertain future." He urged, "Only Congress can provide a permanent solution for DACA recipients to obtain citizenship."
