Tokyo Olympic Village COVID-19 Cases Confirmed (Update)
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] AFP and other foreign media outlets reported on the 17th, citing the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee, that a COVID-19 case was confirmed in the Tokyo Olympic Village.
This is the first time a confirmed case has been reported in the Olympic Village where athletes stay and dine. The occurrence of this case has raised significant safety concerns with only six days remaining until the opening of the Tokyo Olympics.
A spokesperson for the organizing committee stated at a press conference, "Infection was confirmed through screening tests."
The confirmed case is known to be a staff member, but their nationality has not been disclosed. Japan's NHK reported that the infected individual is a foreigner, not Japanese.
It is reported that this person was immediately transferred to a medical facility after testing positive.
