Japanese Police Deploy 60,000 Security Personnel for Tokyo Olympics Despite No Spectators
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Due to the impact of COVID-19, most events of the Tokyo Olympics have been decided to be held without spectators, and the police security personnel will be deployed in the largest scale ever in Japan.
On the 16th, the National Police Agency of Japan announced that it will respond to the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics security with a force of about 60,000 personnel.
Although this is about 3,400 fewer than the original plan considering the no-spectator games, it is said to be the largest scale of security personnel ever mobilized by the Japanese police for a large-scale event.
Until now, the largest number of security personnel deployed by the Japanese police was for the 2019 event related to the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito (德仁).
At that time, about 26,000 police officers were mobilized nationwide.
The Japanese police will operate the comprehensive Olympic and Paralympic countermeasures headquarters, headed by Police Commissioner Mitsuhiro Matsumoto, to focus on preventing terrorism around stadiums and related facilities, protecting foreign dignitaries, and managing traffic.
