Mamnoon Hussain, Former President of Pakistan, Passes Away After Battle with Cancer at Age 81...
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Mamnoon Hussain, former President of Pakistan, passed away at the age of 81 on the night of the 13th (local time) after battling cancer.
According to Pakistani media including Express Tribune on the 15th, former President Hussain was diagnosed with cancer in February last year and had been receiving treatment at a hospital in southern Karachi for the past two weeks.
He served as the 12th President from September 2013 to September 2018.
Pakistan is a country that adopts a parliamentary system where the Prime Minister holds real power. The President serves mainly a ceremonial role as the symbolic head of state and commander-in-chief of the military.
He began his political career in the late 1960s, with southern Sindh province as his main support base. In 1999, he also served as the Governor of Sindh under the administration of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
He was regarded as a politician with a gentle personality and professional insight. Even during his presidency, he was known to quietly carry out his duties behind the scenes without seeking the spotlight.
Upon hearing the news of his passing, Shehbaz Sharif, leader of the opposition Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) to which he belonged, expressed regret, saying, "Pakistan has lost a beloved politician with a good character."
