Gyeongbuk Province Produces 'Takjabolrak' Seeds for the First Time in Korea... 100,000 Juveniles Released in the East Sea for the First Trial
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Dong-guk] Gyeongbuk Province announced on the 15th that the Fisheries Resources Research Institute successfully produced the high value-added species 'Takja Bollak' among rockfish species for the first time in Korea, and released 100,000 juvenile fish, with 50,000 each into the waters of Pohang and Ulleung.
Since 2016, the institute has selectively collected only rockfish individuals from the Gyeongbuk coastal area to preserve and conduct tests and research on the endangered high-quality rockfish species of the East Coast, focusing on breeding and managing superior broodstock.
In particular, after persistent research on biological characteristics such as maturation and spawning periods, the institute succeeded in artificial seed production of Takja Bollak among rockfish species for the first time in Korea in March 2021.
Takja Bollak, also called 'Geomjeong Yeolgi,' is popular among gourmets as it can be enjoyed raw as sashimi or grilled semi-dried. Due to its low catch volume compared to demand, it is not easily accessible and is a hopeful resource species for local fishermen as a source of income.
Additionally, as part of the East Coast Golden Fishing Ground Creation Project, the institute is accelerating resource development projects by releasing 650,000 juvenile Mongchi Gajami and 100,000 juvenile Dolgajami into five coastal cities and counties during the same period.

Song Kyung-chang, head of the Gyeongbuk Province East Sea Regional Headquarters, said, "This great achievement with Takja Bollak can be seen as a signal for the restoration of the disappearing high-quality fish species of the East Coast," and added, "We will continue to focus on testing and research to develop new high-income sources by resource development of preferred species by fishermen such as flatfish species, Dokdo shrimp, abalone, and sea cucumber every year."
