Operation of Heatwave Shelters and Heat Damage Mitigation Facilities and Strengthening of Surveillance Activities
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) is busy responding to the heatwave to protect citizens' health and prevent property damage as the intense heat begins in earnest.
On the 14th, Suncheon City announced that since the end of the rainy season on the 9th, a heatwave advisory has been in effect, and from the day before, it was upgraded to a heatwave warning. The city is focusing all efforts on operating heatwave shelters and heatwave damage reduction facilities, as well as conducting patrol activities in vulnerable areas such as farming work sites and construction sites.
The city operates a surveillance system for heat-related illnesses in cooperation with hospitals and public health centers at all levels, and frequently promotes heatwave response guidelines using the 540 village broadcasting systems.
In addition, about 2,150 disaster helpers regularly check on vulnerable groups such as the elderly through phone calls and visits.
They operate shade shelters (57 locations), cooling fog systems (5 locations), and a clean road system (1 location) to alleviate the urban heat island effect, and run two water spraying trucks on major arterial roads.
Furthermore, village halls and senior centers are operated as heatwave shelters (715 locations) with cooling costs supported, and 35,000 masks were distributed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The city plans to additionally install shade shelters in various urban locations such as in front of crosswalks, operate a rental service for parasols, and supply Suncheonman Clean Water.
