"Living with Older Brother Who Is Sexual Assault Perpetrator"...Teen Girl's 청원 to 청와대 Sparks Public Outrage
"Sexually assaulted by older brother since elementary school"
Reported older brother in 2019... Trial currently ongoing
"Parents hired several lawyers for older brother"
[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] A female high school student has sparked controversy by posting a petition seeking help, claiming she was sexually harassed and assaulted by her biological older brother. The high school student was even hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital due to continuous sexual assault, but the perpetrator, her older brother, reportedly shows no signs of remorse. In particular, the siblings' parents have reportedly hired a lawyer for their son, causing public outrage.
On the 13th, a petition titled "I, a victim of sexual assault, am living with the perpetrator" was posted on the Blue House National Petition Board. As of 4:30 PM on the 14th, the petition had received over 77,500 signatures.
The petitioner, who introduced herself as a 19-year-old youth living in Seoul, said, "I am currently in a situation where I cannot stay at home," and revealed, "I was sexually harassed by my older brother starting from when I was in the upper grades of elementary school during our home's remodeling construction. The harassment gradually became bolder and turned into sexual assault."
Regarding the first time she was sexually harassed, the petitioner said, "During the remodeling construction, there was a time when we slept together in one room. Even though I was half asleep, I still vividly remember it. At that time, I was sleeping with my back turned to my brother, but he was hugging me from behind. Since such things happened often, I thought nothing of it and tried to sleep. But suddenly, my brother's hand moved onto my chest."
She continued, "I had many thoughts then. 'Why is my brother suddenly doing this?', 'Maybe he touched me by mistake,' 'If I resist or get angry here, will it become awkward between us?' I had various thoughts and eventually pretended to keep sleeping quietly. That is the first harassment I remember."
The petitioner confessed that she had been sexually harassed by her older brother for several years since then. She said, "My brother did not use contraceptives. Whenever I tried to avoid him by going into my room, he kept following me in. I wanted to lock the door, but my parents did not like me locking it, so there was no doorknob."
She revealed that she reported her brother to investigative authorities two years ago in 2019, and the trial is currently underway. She said, "Even though the trial is ongoing, I wrote this petition because my brother has shown no remorse even after the investigation and the case was handed over to the prosecution. In fact, there was another assault by my brother in February this year, and although I got angry, my parents scolded me instead."
She added, "(When I attempted an extreme act) my father slapped me twice. I am still living with my brother," and explained, "I was hospitalized in a psychiatric ward, but since I am a minor, I needed my parents' consent to be discharged. My father made returning home a condition for discharge. That's how I ended up going back home."
Furthermore, the petitioner said, "My brother sometimes deliberately provokes me even though he knows the stress I have. I once told my father that I dislike my brother's behavior, but the response was, 'It's because you are not affectionate enough to your brother. Try hugging him once.' My parents are currently siding with the perpetrator, my brother, and have hired several private lawyers to prepare for the trial, while I am preparing with a court-appointed lawyer."
In conclusion, she appealed, "Even though we are no longer siblings but 'victim' and 'perpetrator,' am I unable to escape from parents who demand affection?" and "If this case is not brought to public attention, I will have to return to my devastated home and live as if nothing happened. I consider this my last attempt and thus posted this petition."
