Lee Jae-myung "Mandatory Installation of Dust and Noise Monitors at Construction Sites in Gyeonggi-do"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, announced that from this month, the installation of fine dust and noise measuring devices and CCTV will be mandatory for public construction projects above a certain scale.
On the 13th, Governor Lee posted on Facebook an article titled "A Comfortable Environment is a Basic Right... Mandatory Installation of Dust and Noise Measuring Devices at Construction Sites," stating, "Problems created by humans can be solved by humans," and emphasized, "Fine dust and urban noise are not unavoidable natural disasters but issues that humans can resolve."
He continued, "Gyeonggi Province will mandate the installation of fine dust and noise measuring devices and CCTV at construction sites with a total floor area of 1,000㎡ or more commissioned by the province, effective from this month," explaining, "This is a measure to reduce dust and noise generated at construction sites."
In particular, he noted, "Complaints related to dust have surged recently, with 94% of complaints nationwide concerning dust from construction sites, posing a significant threat to environmental and health rights," adding, "Noise complaints also accounted for 74% of noise and vibration complaints in Gyeonggi Province, mostly related to apartment construction."
Governor Lee also stated, "Along with this, the installation of CCTV at major entrances and exits will be mandatory to prevent environmental pollution acts that may occur at construction sites."
Earlier in May, Gyeonggi Province proposed a legislative amendment to the Ministry of Environment to strengthen environmental management of construction sites.
Governor Lee expressed hope, saying, "I look forward to the prompt enactment of legislation to realize the constitutional basic right that all citizens have the right to live in a healthy and comfortable environment."
