Testing at 3 Stores in Single-Person and General Residential Areas, and Resorts... "Expansion Considered After Results Review"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] Emart24 is partnering with Nonghyup Economic Holdings Livestock Economy (Nonghyup) to conduct an experiment selling refrigerated pork and Korean beef.
On the 13th, Emart24 announced that it will conduct a "Baro Pick" sales experiment for Nonghyup antibiotic-free pork 5 types (Samgyeop [pork belly], Beolzip Samgyeop [honeycomb pork belly], Moksim [pork neck], Samgyeop+Moksim, Stew Cuts) and antibiotic-free Korean beef 2 types (Sirloin, Striploin) at three stores located in single-person residential areas, general residential areas, and resort areas.
Emart24 has prepared separate refrigerated display units exclusively for Nonghyup refrigerated pork and Korean beef and attached promotional materials to make it noticeable to customers. Emart24 said it undertook this experiment to gauge customer response to refrigerated meat sales at convenience stores.
Until now, except for some special location stores, convenience stores mainly sold frozen meat such as frozen Samgyeopsal and frozen steak. Emart24 explained, "With the increase in one- to two-person households and more customers enjoying short-distance shopping at nearby convenience stores, we decided to conduct this refrigerated meat sales experiment."
The price of pork sold by Emart24 is set at 3,170 KRW (per 100g of Samgyeopsal or Moksim), and Korean beef at 9,930 KRW (per 100g of sirloin), reflecting prices distributed both online and offline. Emart24 and Nonghyup plan to consider expanding refrigerated meat sales based on the results of this sales test.
In February last year, Emart24 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Nonghyup Economic Holdings to promote the sale of domestic agricultural products and has been supplying and selling various products such as frozen Samgyeopsal, fruits, and vegetables.
Emart24 stated that in the first half of this year, sales of frozen meat such as frozen Samgyeopsal and frozen steak increased more than fourfold (316%) compared to the first half of 2019 before COVID-19. During the same period, fresh food sales also rose significantly, with fruits increasing 3.2 times (221%) and vegetables 2.8 times (183%). Especially with the increase in fruit buyers, Emart24 is holding a monthly "Fruit of the Month" event offering seasonal fruits at discounted prices. Emart24 said, "Unlike before when the focus was on small quantities of fruit for one to two people, customers continue to purchase by offering large quantities of seasonal fruits such as a box of fruit or a whole watermelon at discounted prices for nearby shopping."

Sales of seasonings also increased by 107% during COVID-19, and sales of daily necessities such as large roll toilet paper, 3-pack facial tissues, and laundry detergent rose by 60-80%. Park Sanghyun, Emart24 buyer, said, "As customers can purchase various products including fresh food at convenience stores near their homes, convenience stores are establishing themselves as short-distance shopping sites." He added, "In line with this trend, Emart24 is differentiating itself by expanding fresh food categories such as frozen meat, fruits, and vegetables, and continuously launching the 'MinSaeng' brand products, a concept of ultra-low-priced daily necessities with high cost-effectiveness."
