Establishment of a Dedicated Department for Integration of Manguri Park Projects... Operation of Jungnang Mangwoo Space, Maintenance of Resident Facilities and Hiking (Walking) Trails, Yoon Gwan-sun Memorial Events, Transforming into a Historical and Cultural Park to Experience Forests, Trails, and Modern Historical Figures
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Concrete work has begun to create Manguri Park as Seoul's representative historical and cultural park, a flagship project promoted by Ryu Sa-gyeong, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, since his inauguration in the 7th term of the civilian government.
Jungnang-gu established the Manguri Park Division on the 1st of this month to develop Manguri Park into Seoul's representative historical and cultural park.
Manguri Park was a communal cemetery for 40 years from 1933 to 1973, but it is now loved by residents as a space where forests, walking trails, and the burial sites of famous modern and contemporary historical figures coexist.
The district transferred the management rights of Manguri Park from Seoul City in July last year, and through the establishment of this dedicated department, aims to firmly establish it as Seoul's representative historical and cultural park.
Tasks related to Manguri Park, which were previously dispersed across departments such as the Park and Greenery Division and the Culture and Tourism Division, will be concentrated in one place to build an organic business system.
The dedicated department consists of three teams: Policy, Facilities, and Operations. They will manage the citizen convenience facility "Jungnang Mangwoo Space," scheduled to open by the end of the year, maintain burial sites and hiking (walking) trails, create rest areas, and develop and operate exploration and educational programs.
A memorial event for activist Yu Gwan-sun will also be held. Last year, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Yu Gwan-sun's martyrdom, the district renovated the joint burial site of Yu Gwan-sun in Manguri Park and held a memorial event, which will continue steadily in the future. Additionally, the department will manage the "Eternal Memory Volunteer Corps," where residents individually care for the burial sites of famous modern and contemporary figures interred in Manguri Park.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "Manguri Park will be reborn as 'Mangwoo Historical and Cultural Park,' where history and culture coexist, moving beyond a simple cemetery park," adding, "We will strive to expand resident convenience facilities and develop various experiential programs so that more residents can visit."
