60-Year-Old Childcare Helper Charged for Smoking While Carrying 80-Day-Old Baby
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Choyoung] A 60-year-old childcare helper who was smoking while carrying an 80-day-old baby on her back has been booked by the police.
On the 9th, the Women and Juvenile Crime Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency announced that they are investigating childcare helper A (68) on charges of physical abuse under the Child Welfare Act.
According to the police, a woman in her 30s, B, who lives in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, witnessed A smoking on the 28th of last month and reported this to the police on the 29th of the same month.
B said she had been suspicious because A usually smelled of cigarette smoke whenever she went out and came back with the child. One day, while returning home to get a mask, she directly witnessed A smoking.
B shared this fact through a local mom cafe and various online communities, and the post quickly spread, causing controversy.
During the police investigation, A admitted to smoking and expressed remorse but claimed that she was also a victim of assault by B’s husband. On the other hand, B stated, "My husband has never been violent or threatening," and said she "has not received a sincere apology."
