[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, Japan's daily new COVID-19 cases have recorded over 2,000 for three consecutive days.
On the 9th, the number of newly confirmed COVID-19 infections in Japan was 2,279 (as of 8 PM), exceeding 2,000 for the third consecutive day.
It is the first time in over a month since the 4th of last month that the number surpassed 2,000 on a Friday.
In Tokyo, 822 new infections were confirmed on this day, 162 more than the previous Friday.
Thus, Tokyo has shown a clear upward trend, increasing for 20 consecutive days compared to the same day one week earlier.
As of this day, Japan's cumulative confirmed cases reached 816,810, with 14,953 deaths.
Considering the recent spread of COVID-19, the Japanese government decided yesterday to declare a state of emergency in the Tokyo area from the 12th of this month through the 22nd of next month, covering the entire Olympic period.
Meanwhile, infections continue to be reported among foreign athletes visiting Japan ahead of the Olympic opening ceremony on the 23rd.
