The inauguration ceremony was held in the main conference room of the headquarters building, minimizing the number of attendees to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and conducted via a non-face-to-face video conference.
At the inauguration, Chief Lee stated, “I will do my best to create a safe sea that the public can trust and feel secure in, and to thoroughly protect maritime sovereignty and security.”
He emphasized, “The West and South Seas continue to face conflicts with neighboring countries over securing fishery resources and are exposed to international crimes such as smuggling and illegal immigration via the sea. We will take lessons from recent seizures of smuggling vessels and strengthen our efforts in guarding against international crimes.”
He continued, “To establish maritime law and order following the adjustment of investigative authority between the police and prosecutors, we will establish a responsible investigative foundation. We will actively crack down to eradicate the five major maritime corruptions, including acts that threaten public safety and human rights violations against socially vulnerable groups.”
Furthermore, he added, “Today, the West Sea Coast Guard begins its first voyage toward a new leap forward with me. Although the journey will not always be smooth, I will strive to overcome difficulties together with you by keeping an open mind and reflecting on challenges whenever they arise.”
Chief Lee is from Yeongam, Jeollanam-do, graduated from Gwangju Dongsin High School and Korea Maritime and Ocean University, and earned a master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom.
