Death of Seoul National University Dormitory Cleaning Worker Under Investigation by Human Rights Center
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Seoul National University announced on the 8th that it has decided, under the president's authority, to request an objective investigation from the Seoul National University Human Rights Center regarding whether there was any human rights violation due to workplace power harassment related to the death of a cleaning worker at Gwanak Student Dormitory.
Earlier, on the 26th of last month, a cleaning worker named Lee was found dead in the break room at the university. The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions' National Democratic General Labor Union and others claimed that the safety management team leader had habitually engaged in 'gapjil' (power harassment) against Lee and other cleaning workers.
The university stated that the safety management team leader was reassigned to other duties instead of managing the cleaning workers. Whether disciplinary action will be taken will be decided after the Human Rights Center completes its investigation.
