Opening of the First Domestic Solar Telescope and Other Astronomical Observatories
National Science Museum to Open from the 16th, Online Promotion Event Held on the 10th
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] The National Science Museum will open an astronomical observatory specializing in solar observation on the 16th to meet the public's demand for astronomical observation and contribute to the popularization of scientific culture through education.
The observatory has a total floor area of 344㎡ and consists of two above-ground floors, including an observation room, an experiential learning room, and a control room. Visitors can see the domestic first research-use solar telescope that was operated at Bohyeonsan Observatory of the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute. This equipment actively studied solar activity for about 26 years from 1994 to 2019 and was a facility not easily accessible to the general public.
Currently in pilot operation, it will officially open on the 16th. It will operate three times a day through a reservation system via the museum's website. The operation program consists of explanations and experiential activities using the solar telescope, and to comply with quarantine rules, the number of participants per session is limited to 10 people.
The National Science Museum will hold a live online broadcast of solar observation from 2 p.m. on the 10th to promote the opening of the observatory. It will be streamed live on the museum's YouTube channel, Science Museum TV. The broadcast will include an introduction to the observatory site and real-time observation of solar activity through the solar telescope.
