Safe Road Contest... Siheung 'Neunggok District Traffic Calming Project' Grand Prize
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] In the '2nd Safe Road Contest' held from April to June, the 'Neunggok District Traffic Calming Project' submitted by Siheung City Health Center was selected as the grand prize winner in the road traffic planning category.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 5th that it will hold an awards ceremony on the 7th, Road Day, selecting 21 outstanding works in three categories in this contest co-hosted with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Korea Road Association.
Safe roads are roads that apply traffic calming facilities such as zigzag patterns, small roundabouts, and lane narrowing to induce a reduction in vehicle speed and enhance pedestrian safety.
The 'Neunggok District Traffic Calming Project' submitted by Siheung City Health Center was selected by conducting a detailed analysis of traffic accident and population data to choose the project site. It received high evaluations for using traffic calming techniques such as raised crosswalks, tree-lined central medians, and zigzag-shaped roads.
In the urban regeneration planning category, the 'Sinjang-dong Resident Participation Street Environment Improvement Project' submitted by Hanam City Hall was selected as the grand prize winner and received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award. Traffic calming techniques such as installing one-way streets and bollard lighting were applied to dangerous roads frequently used by vulnerable traffic groups.

In the excellent operation case category, Jeonju City Hall's 'Jeonju Cheotmajung-gil' was selected as the grand prize winner. It was highly evaluated not only for significantly improving road safety but also for contributing to enhancing the city's image by installing a central pedestrian plaza, planting 400 trees, and setting up a water mirror fountain.
