This eco-friendly energy solution business aims to reduce carbon emissions by efficiently using energy produced directly at home, targeting advanced markets such as Europe and the United States first.
Samsung Electronics and Hanwha Q CELLS announced on the 5th that they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for mutual cooperation to build Zero Energy Homes on the 2nd at Hanwha Group headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul. The signing ceremony was attended by key executives from both companies, including Jaesung Lee, President of Samsung Electronics' Consumer Electronics Division, and Heechul Kim, President of Hanwha Q CELLS. The two companies plan to collaborate in various areas such as linking their respective platforms, technology, and personnel support to realize Zero Energy Homes.
The Zero Energy Home envisioned by the two companies involves Hanwha Q CELLS producing and securing electricity through residential solar modules and energy storage systems (ESS), while Samsung Electronics provides an energy management system based on its 'SmartThings Energy' service. This aims to offer an integrated comprehensive energy service covering energy production, storage, usage, and management.
In particular, Samsung Electronics' SmartThings is a service that monitors the energy consumption of Samsung home appliances linked to the application (app) in real time and analyzes user patterns to efficiently manage electricity usage. As an open platform, it allows users to connect and manage various Internet of Things (IoT) appliances later, even if they are not Samsung products.
Samsung Electronics and Hanwha Q CELLS will begin their cooperation focusing on the European and U.S. markets, where interest in eco-friendly energy is high. According to a survey by global energy consulting firm Wood Mackenzie, Hanwha Q CELLS ranked first in the U.S. residential solar module market for three consecutive years from 2018 to 2020.
President Lee said, "We expect great synergy when Samsung Electronics, which owns both smart appliances and the SmartThings platform, combines with Hanwha Q CELLS' solar energy solutions." President Kim emphasized, "We expect that the two Korean-leading companies cooperating in the global market will provide competitive energy-saving solutions," adding, "Through synergy between the two companies, we will establish a solid position in the global residential energy market."
