[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 5th that it will additionally sell Seoul Sarang Gift Certificates starting from the 12th. This is the second issuance this year, following the 394 billion won issued in February.
The additional issuance volume for the second half of the year, confirmed in the supplementary budget, is 400 billion won. Starting at 10 a.m. on the 12th, Seoul will sequentially sell the gift certificates at a 10% discounted price through autonomous districts. Amid the worsening difficulties for self-employed business owners due to the surge in COVID-19 cases and the postponement of social distancing easing, this is expected to contribute to revitalizing local small businesses.
Seoul will sell the gift certificates in 20 autonomous districts over three days from the 12th to the 14th, while the remaining districts will begin sales in August. The first issuance scale for the second half is 200 billion won, and the remaining 200 billion won will be specially issued before Chuseok in September depending on the circumstances of the autonomous districts.
The Seoul Sarang Gift Certificates issued this time can be purchased at a 10% discounted price through 20 gift certificate payment apps, with a purchase limit of 700,000 won per person. The purchased gift certificates must be used within five years.
Meanwhile, Seoul Sarang Gift Certificates, which started with 9 gift certificate payment apps and 10,000 users, surpassed a cumulative sales amount of 1 trillion won in just over a year since issuance. Currently, the number of users has expanded to 3.26 million across 20 gift certificate payment apps. The number of affiliated stores has also reached 330,000.
Seo Seong-man, Seoul City Labor and Livelihood Policy Officer, expressed expectations, saying, “We hope that the issuance of Seoul Sarang Gift Certificates, loved by Seoul citizens, will provide comfort to citizens exhausted by COVID-19,” and added, “It is expected to contribute to increasing sales for small business owners in Seoul who are suffering huge business losses.”
