300 New COVID-19 Cases in Seoul by 9 PM... 123 More Than Last Week
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The number of new COVID-19 cases reported in the Seoul area from midnight to 9 p.m. on Sunday, the 4th, was counted at 300, an increase of 123 compared to the same time last Sunday.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that the number of new COVID-19 cases reported in Seoul during the 21 hours from midnight to 9 p.m. on the 4th was tentatively counted at 300. Compared to the same time frame, this was higher than the 257 cases reported the previous day and 123 more than the 164 cases reported on Sunday, the 27th of last week. Based on the 21-hour tally alone, this is expected to be the second highest number recorded on a Sunday this year, following the 329 cases recorded on January 3rd.
Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, the highest number of daily confirmed cases in Seoul was 552 on December 24th of last year, and the highest record this year was 375 cases on Tuesday, June 29th. The daily number of confirmed cases in Seoul surged to over 300 per day at the end of last year, then gradually decreased to mostly remain in the 100s from mid-January to early April.

However, the numbers began to rise again from mid-April, reaching levels comparable to the worst periods at the end of last year and the beginning of this year in late June and early July. The numbers for the past week (June 27th to July 3rd) were 185 → 205 → 375 → 333 → 346 → 359 → 289. This increase is presumed to be due to the spread of variant viruses such as the Delta variant, raising concerns that the spread may intensify further in the future.
