Lee Jun-seok "Respecting Judiciary's Ruling on Yoon's Mother-in-law... People Will Judge Based on Yoon-Related Matters"
"No Changes Expected in Eligibility Requirements for Party Admission"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, stated that "there is no change in the requirements for joining the People Power Party" regarding the sentencing of former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol's mother-in-law to three years in prison for violating medical laws and fraudulently claiming nursing care benefits, and her subsequent detention in court. Lee also expressed the view that the public's judgment will focus not on the illegal activities themselves but on whether former Prosecutor General Yoon influenced those illegal activities.
Lee made these remarks after attending the 'Bundang-Pangyo Youth Debate Battle' held at Pangyo Youth Space in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, where he met with reporters and shared his thoughts on the ruling concerning former Prosecutor General Yoon's mother-in-law.
Regarding the ruling, Lee said, "Since this is a first-instance judgment by the judiciary, it must naturally be respected," adding, "As I mentioned before, I believe the public's standard will be whether the presidential candidate had any influence on the person's faults or charges." He continued, "South Korea does not practice the principle of guilt by association, so I think the public will make their own judgment on such matters."
In response to Democratic Party officials claiming that former Prosecutor General Yoon "deceived the public" in relation to this ruling, Lee said, "I don't know what they mean by 'deceived,' but judicial decisions must go through up to three trials, and restricting a politician's activities based on issues concerning relatives is a concept even the Democratic Party has rejected. Therefore, I question whether it is appropriate to bring up such a concept to attack."
