Gwangju City Council "Welcomes Inclusion of Gwangju-Daegu Dalbit Inland Railway in National Railway Network"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan Council announced on the 1st that it, along with 1.5 million citizens of Gwangju, welcomes the inclusion of the ‘Gwangju-Daegu Dalbit Inland Railway Construction Project’ in the 4th National Railway Network Construction Plan.
The Gwangju Metropolitan Council stated, “We deeply thank the citizens of Yeongnam and Honam regions who actively united their will to ensure that the ‘Dalbit Inland Railway Construction Project,’ a 20-year-long wish of the people of Yeongnam and Honam, could be reflected in this national railway plan.”
They continued, “In particular, we sincerely thank Assemblyman Jo O-seop and other National Assembly members from Gwangju and Daegu who devoted their utmost efforts for this achievement, Mayor Lee Yong-seop and related officials who worked tirelessly on site, the governors and council chairs of the six local governments through which the high-speed railway passes, civic groups, and local media.”
They also explained, “At the public hearing last April, the project was omitted from the national railway network plan due to a lack of economic feasibility, which left the citizens of Yeongnam and Honam feeling disheartened. Although belated, we consider it fortunate that the policy necessity of expanding the transverse railway network for regional balanced development was recognized and reflected.”
Furthermore, they emphasized, “The Dalbit Inland Railway Construction Project is by no means simply a project to add a railway line. It is a great first step to overcome long-standing political conflicts and achieve East-West harmony and national unity. Through active human and material exchanges, it will form a new growth engine in the southern region and serve as a driving force for national balanced development.”
