[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City announced that the organizing committee for the "United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Congress" will officially launch on the 1st.
According to the city, the UCLG Congress will be held for five days starting October 3 next year near the Daejeon Convention Center. Since the Expo in 1993, the UCLG Congress is the largest international event held in the region, with over 140 member country city leaders and key figures from international organizations such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and the United Nations Development Programme expected to attend.
The organizing committee will be composed of 7 teams within 1 division and 2 departments, taking full responsibility for preparing the event, including discussing plans for the successful hosting of the UCLG Congress.
The committee chairperson has been appointed as Mayor Heo Tae-jeong of Daejeon. External executives participating include Kim Bok-cheol, chairman of the Daedeok Science District Institution Heads Council; Jeong Tae-hee, chairman of the Daejeon Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Lee Gwang-chuk, president of TJB Daejeon Broadcasting; Ham Young-joo, vice chairman of Hana Financial Group; and Kang Dae-hoon, chairman of the Overseas Korean Economic Cooperation Association.
Previously, the city had been promoting the establishment of the organizing committee since last year and completed related administrative procedures such as approval for the committee's establishment and corporate registration by last month.
Along with the launch of the organizing committee, the city will conduct both online and offline promotions through citizen reporters, university student supporters, and citizen publicity groups, as well as overseas online promotions via overseas diplomatic missions and Daejeon's sister and friendship city networks.
Additionally, a UCLG Congress advisory committee will be formed to provide advice on project planning and execution by sector, international networking, and other matters. The city plans to compose the committee with experts from each field, numbering fewer than 20 people.
