[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Junhyung] Home appliance company Cuckoo Electronics announced on the 1st that it ranked first in sales among imported rice cooker brands during China's '618 Shopping Festival,' which ended on the 20th of last month.
The 618 Shopping Festival is the largest online shopping event in China during the first half of the year. It was started by China's leading e-commerce company JD.com to commemorate its founding anniversary on June 18.
During the 618 festival held from the 1st to the 20th of last month, Cuckoo Electronics' sales increased by 125% compared to the same period last year. During the same period, it recorded approximately 4.3 billion KRW in sales on e-commerce platforms Tmall and JD.com alone. The company explained that this was an outstanding achievement among imported rice cooker brands.
The background of this success was targeting China's emerging MZ generation by strengthening online marketing. Cuckoo Electronics collaborated with local influencer Cherry (雪梨) to hold an online live broadcast promotion, capturing the attention of MZ consumers. Local media such as China Economic News reported, "Korean Cuckoo Electronics' rice cookers saw a rapid increase in sales due to active promotion and event execution."
Localized strategies also contributed to the sales performance. Considering the Chinese preference for rice cooked in cast iron pots, Cuckoo Electronics positioned rice cooker models equipped with cast iron inner pots as their main products.
According to Cuckoo Electronics, electric rice cookers were analyzed as the best-selling small home appliance in China during the first half of last year. Accordingly, the company plans to accelerate its efforts to capture the Chinese market focusing on locally customized premium rice cookers.
