[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Three projects submitted by Pukyong National University were simultaneously selected in the Korea Meteorological Administration’s (KMA) ‘2021 Smart City Meteorological and Climate Convergence Technology Development’ competition.

National Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-soo) announced on the 30th that it was selected as the lead research institution for two projects and as a joint research institution for one project in this KMA competition.

This project was announced by the KMA to implement and disseminate meteorological and climate convergence technologies aimed at enhancing urban residents’ safety and convenience, and to produce and distribute high-resolution meteorological information in real time to expand the value of meteorological and climate data.

Pukyong National University’s Professors Lee Dong-in and Kim Jae-jin from the Department of Environmental Atmospheric Sciences will lead research and development by utilizing advanced technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things) to develop three-dimensional meteorological analysis and forecasting technologies centered on urban areas and establish a meteorological observation utilization system.

Professor Lee Dong-in’s research team was selected as the lead institution for the ‘Smart City High-Resolution Meteorological Observation Utilization System Research’ project and, together with institutions such as Sejong University and Dongnyeok Co., Ltd., will receive a total of 1 billion KRW in funding by 2022 to optimize a high-resolution three-dimensional gridded urban meteorological observation utilization system using meteorological observation data.

The team plans to propose a plan for establishing a high-resolution urban meteorological observation network to improve the efficiency of meteorological observation network construction in domestic urban areas and standardize IoT urban meteorological observation data metadata to maximize the usability of smart city meteorological information.

In particular, Professor Lee Dong-in’s research team will also participate as a joint research institution in the project ‘Development of Smart City Safety and Road Hazard Meteorological Information Service Production Technology,’ receiving 360 million KRW in funding by 2024 to conduct research on developing a prototype technology for producing IoT-based high-resolution hazardous meteorological information.

Professor Kim Jae-jin’s research team will lead the ‘Development of Smart City Meteorological Analysis Field and Forecast Field Production Technology’ project and, together with institutions such as Mirae Climate Co., Ltd. and Kongju National University, will receive a total of 1.85 billion KRW in funding by 2024 to develop high-resolution three-dimensional meteorological analysis fields (values combining meteorological observation data and background data) and forecast field production technologies for providing smart city meteorological and climate convergence services.

The team plans to develop technology for producing three-dimensional high-resolution meteorological fields at the urban scale and secure technology to combine these with ground meteorological observation data.

Once developed, these technologies are expected to be used as basic data for establishing countermeasures against meteorological disasters such as strong winds and heatwaves in urban areas, as well as for solving urban environmental issues such as fine dust.
