Sejong Launches Autonomous Police Committee... Independent Operations Begin Next Month
[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Sejong City held the inauguration ceremony of the Autonomous Police Committee on the 29th and presented appointment letters to the inaugural seven members, including Chairman Kim Sang-bong (Professor of Government Administration at Korea University).
The committee completed its member composition last May and underwent a pilot operation period. Starting next month, it will independently carry out its duties as a deliberative administrative body under the city.
The main tasks include public safety, traffic, security affairs, and certain investigations such as juvenile, domestic violence, child abuse, and traffic cases.
Chairman Kim Sang-bong stated, “As the inaugural chairman, I will strive to implement autonomous police services that Sejong citizens can truly experience,” adding, “In particular, we have established six key strategies including citizen sovereignty and human rights emphasis, and we will faithfully promote these to create a citizen-centered community of public safety.”

Meanwhile, the inaugural committee is composed of Chairman Kim, Professor Kwak Young-gil of the Department of Police Administration at Chungnam National University, Kim Young-gil, former director of the Leadership Center at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Attorney Moon Hyun-woong, Attorney Lee Yong-sook, former Senior Superintendent Lim Seon-ho, and Attorney Jo Yoon-sung.
