Lee Donghun, CEO of Gwangju Shinsegae, Joins 'Go-Go Challenge' Plastic-Free Campaign
[Asia Economy Honam Newsroom, reporter Shin Dongho] Lee Donghun, CEO of Gwangju Shinsegae Co., announced on June 28 that he has joined the "Go-Go Challenge," a campaign aimed at eliminating plastic use.
CEO Lee was nominated to participate by Kim Jaebong, Chief Director of Shinsegae Eye Clinic.
Gwangju Shinsegae actively encourages the use of eco-friendly shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags for the sake of the planet.
In addition, Gwangju Shinsegae is actively engaged in environmentally friendly management practices.
Earlier this month, to promote a sustainable environment and ethical consumption culture, the company held the "On-Green Market" campaign on June 5 in celebration of Environment Day.
To save energy, the company replaced regular lighting with LED lights last year, achieving about a 50% reduction in electricity consumption compared to previous levels. The installation of water-saving devices in restroom sinks resulted in an additional 20% reduction in water usage.
Since the Lunar New Year holiday in 2018, the company has expanded the use of eco-friendly and recyclable packaging materials and refrigerants. By eliminating the use of wood and cloth packaging and switching to recyclable cardboard boxes, Gwangju Shinsegae has contributed to environmental protection while maintaining product quality.
Furthermore, in the basement-level 1 food section, the company is working to promote and boost sales of green products such as dishwashing detergents, household goods, laundry detergents, deodorizers, and air fresheners.
In the agricultural section, Gwangju Shinsegae also sells eco-friendly products, including Green Star (holiday gifts), organic, low-carbon, and pesticide-free certified fruits, vegetables, and eggs.
The company is striving to expand its eco-friendly store concept from a focus on food to all product categories.
As a result of these efforts, Gwangju Shinsegae was designated as a "Green Store" by the Ministry of Environment in May.
CEO Lee stated, "I hope that all of us will participate in the campaign to eliminate plastic for the sake of future generations and make even a small contribution to environmental restoration."
CEO Lee Donghun nominated Park Sanghyun, CEO of the Gwangju-based golf equipment brand Spol, as the next participant in the campaign.
