Huawei Founder: "We Must Learn from the United States"
"Stronger and More Flexible in Science and Technology"
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] Ren Zhengfei, founder and CEO of Huawei, China's largest telecommunications equipment company, emphasized to employees that "we must learn science and technology from the United States." This is because the company must continue to grow in the global market despite the U.S.'s stringent sanctions.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong on the 28th, Ren Zhengfei said at an internal forum last month, "Even if the U.S. continues to apply pressure, Huawei must keep its doors open."
The speech was posted on Huawei's internal online forum on the 26th, ahead of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party on the 1st of next month.
Regarding the difficulties the company faces due to U.S. sanctions, Ren said, "China is part of the world, so the domestic market is also included in the company's internationalization."
He added, "We cannot close the door and must keep it open," emphasizing, "Especially since the U.S. is flexible and strong in science and technology, we need to learn from them."
He warned, "There is no need to refuse to recognize the U.S. as a teacher just because they suppress us," and cautioned, "If we do not learn from the U.S., it will lead to isolation."
Huawei, the world's largest telecommunications equipment company, has suffered from strong U.S. sanctions since 2019 during former President Donald Trump's administration. Currently, Huawei's access to products related to U.S. technology and services is virtually blocked.
In response, Huawei has sold its mid-to-low-end smartphone brand "Honor" while strengthening its cloud computing services and smart car capabilities.
In response to employees' questions about the rapidly changing international environment, Ren said, "Challenges are common, and the company must continue to cooperate with international partners."
He also recommended the Chinese drama "Awakening Age" to employees. This drama, airing ahead of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party, depicts the story of the party's establishment.
