Japan Faces Surge in COVID-19 Cases Ahead of the Olympics
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] COVID-19 continues to spread in Japan ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. The number of new confirmed cases in Tokyo has exceeded the same day of the previous week for seven consecutive days.
According to NHK Broadcasting on the 26th, as of 8 PM, the total number of newly confirmed infections across Japan is 1,632, including 534 in Tokyo. This exceeds the 1,520 cases reported a week ago.
In particular, the number of new confirmed cases in Tokyo has been more than 100 higher than the same day of the previous week for four consecutive days. The average daily new cases over the past seven days is 476, a 26% increase compared to one week ago.
It is evaluated that after peaking in early May during the fourth wave and then declining, the trend has turned to an increase again.
Accordingly, if the spread of COVID-19 worsens again, especially centered in the Tokyo area, a state of emergency may be declared, and negative voices surrounding the hosting of the Olympics are expected to grow louder.
