Hanwha-Daewoo Shipbuilding Consortium to Develop Korean-Style ESS for Ships
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Daeyeol] To develop eco-friendly energy storage systems (ESS) for ships, a consortium of 13 domestic specialized institutions and companies, including Hanwha Defense, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), and the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO), has been formed. The consortium will undertake a national project commissioned by the Korea Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP).
ESS, along with fuel cells, is gaining attention as the next-generation energy source for ships. As environmental regulations tighten worldwide in the shipping and shipbuilding industries, interest in eco-friendly ship technologies is increasing. The consortium in charge of this project plans to develop a lithium battery-based ESS purely with domestic technology within the next three years and install it on large vessels built by Korean shipbuilders.
DSME will provide research facilities and equipment at its Siheung R&D campus. The company explained that it will play a central role throughout the entire process?from establishing the Land-Based Test Site (LBTS) for eco-friendly fuel prototype testing, conducting various test procedures, verifying safety for onboard installation, to the final evaluation stage. It is reported that the project commissioner highly valued DSME and Hanwha Defense’s existing technology and know-how, such as their joint development of ESS for the Navy’s next-generation medium submarines.
