Seocho-gu Provides 350,000 KRW Consolation Payment to '6·25 War Veterans'
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Seocho-gu (Mayor Eunhee Cho) will provide consolation money to the ‘6.25 War Veterans’ residing in the district to honor and pay respect to the veterans who sacrificed and contributed to the nation in commemoration of the Month of National Defense and Veterans in June.
In 2017, the district was the first in Seoul to establish consolation money for war veterans, and in 2019, the amount was increased from 300,000 KRW to 350,000 KRW.
As of 2021, Seocho-gu is the only autonomous district in Seoul that provides ‘consolation money for war veterans.’
The support target for the consolation money is war veterans who have lived in Seocho-gu for more than one year, and the money is paid once a year on the anniversary of the war. The 6.25 War Veterans receive the consolation money every June, and the Vietnam War Veterans receive it every September. Applications for the consolation money can be made by the eligible veteran or their proxy by visiting the local community service center of their residence. Those currently receiving the Seocho-gu veterans’ welfare allowance are excluded.
The district continues to strengthen its veterans’ policies. The residency requirement (more than one year) for the monthly veterans’ welfare allowance has been abolished to ease the criteria, and the May 18 Democratic Veterans under the Act on the Honorable Treatment of May 18 Democratic Veterans have been added to the national veterans’ target group.
Additionally, the scope of beneficiaries for death condolence money has been expanded, and a welfare allowance for spouses of war veterans has been newly established, among various policies to honor and support national veterans.
