Soongsil Cyber University Department of ICT Engineering, Fostering Talent through Convergent IT Technology Education in IoT, Smartphones, and Security
Recently, Internet of Things (IoT) platform technology has been gaining attention in smartphones, automobiles, home appliances, and more. An IoT platform is a technology that connects various sensors and devices, enabling the development and operation of diverse services.
As IoT platforms have rapidly grown beyond the initial research stage, many IT companies are competing to enter the IoT-based application service markets such as autonomous vehicles and smart homes. According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office, domestic patent applications related to IoT platforms increased nearly sixfold over the past seven years, from 20 in 2013 to 115 last year.
Due to the nature of this technology, it is advantageous to secure large-scale industrial data, and the market's first-mover advantage is significant, meaning that once leadership is established, it greatly influences related industries. Not only IT companies but also existing enterprises are focusing on this aspect and competitively developing IoT platforms.
In the education sector, there is also strong interest in core IT technologies such as IoT, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI). The Ministry of Education has finalized the “Basic Plan for Supporting Specialized Leading Colleges in New Industry Fields,” selecting and supporting 12 excellent specialized colleges in new industry fields such as AI, future automobiles, and intelligent robots for the first time this year to nurture outstanding professional talent leading new industrial changes.
The Department of ICT Engineering at Soongsil Cyber University (Department Head Kim Jeong-su) is nurturing talent to contribute to new industries in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) through practical education focused on demand-oriented curricula and convergence education in various advanced ICT specialized fields such as ICT basics, software, big data, IoT, AI, and information security.
The Department of ICT Engineering is a specialized ICT engineering education department at Soongsil Cyber University, which is strong in ICT. It aims to create new value through 4th Industrial Revolution technologies in fields such as life/medical, autonomous vehicles, IoT, big data, AI, and robotics. It offers three specialized majors: Computer Engineering, Software, and Information Security.
By completing various required and elective courses within the department according to the requirements, students can earn a Bachelor of Engineering in ICT. The department also provides benefits such as graduate school admission and employment support through various online and offline ICT study groups, scholarships, and graduate school admission programs linked with Soongsil University’s Graduate School of Information Science and Graduate School of Business.
Kim Jeong-su, head of the Department of ICT Engineering at Soongsil Cyber University, said, “To cultivate professionals in the IoT field, we are strengthening software (SW) major education and focusing on nurturing SW convergence talent linked with various fields such as automobiles, energy, healthcare, and cultural content.” He added, “Through ICT convergence education, we will do our best to discover and nurture convergence talent who will lead new industrial technology fields.”
