View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyun-joo] Former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol is set to begin his full-fledged political activities by embarking on a "public sentiment tour" after declaring his presidential bid at the end of this month. His joining of the People Power Party or any specific party is expected to happen afterward.
Lee Dong-hoon, spokesperson for Yoon's campaign, appeared on a radio show on the 18th and said, "Due to practical circumstances, it might be delayed, but I think the date will be around the 27th," adding, "Ultimately, he is planning to take steps to enter among the people." After declaring his political participation, Yoon will embark on a nationwide public sentiment tour for one to two weeks. The spokesperson said, "We will select locations reflecting parts that do not cause inconvenience to the public," and added, "Because of the symbolism, where he visits is quite important." After the public sentiment tour, Yoon plans to express his intention to join the People Power Party. The timing is expected to be around mid to late July. Preliminary candidate registration for the 20th presidential election also begins on July 12.
Yoon's choice has effectively tilted heavily toward the People Power Party. In the radio interview that day, when the host asked, "Can we take it for granted that he will join the People Power Party?" the spokesperson replied, "Yes, I think you can." Until the day before, they said they were considering various options, but their stance has somewhat changed. The spokesperson also mentioned that Yoon is in communication with Lee Jun-seok, the leader of the People Power Party.
Yoon also indirectly expressed his desire to work with Kim Jong-in, former emergency committee chairman of the People Power Party. However, the gap between Kim and Yoon remains unclosed. Kim appeared on a TV program the day before and criticized, "He has maintained an ambiguous stance for some time, which inevitably caused considerable resentment among the general public," adding, "Both Sohn Hak-kyu and Ahn Cheol-soo also conducted public sentiment tours, but continuing the same political behavior as in the past despite the changing times only annoys the public."

As Yoon begins to move in earnest, the checks and balances from rival politicians in both ruling and opposition parties are intensifying. Former Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun appeared on a radio show that morning and said, "If we just assign work because someone is popular, where would South Korea be headed now?" Kim Yong-min, senior supreme council member of the Democratic Party, said, "He is a representative anti-reform figure and a political prosecutor who is currently a leading opposition presidential candidate," while Democratic presidential candidate Park Yong-jin sharpened his criticism, saying, "He seems to have no vision or policies to be verified, only a strong desire to become president." Independent lawmaker Hong Joon-pyo, who is discussing rejoining the People Power Party, indirectly criticized, saying, "If he fails to pass the qualification verification for national governance ability and moral scrutiny of himself and his family, he cannot become president, and the presidency will be nothing more than a midsummer night's dream."
