SK Ecoplant Develops Floor Structure to Reduce Interfloor Noise..."Top Level in Korea" View original image

[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] SK Ecoplant (formerly SK Construction) announced on the 17th that it has developed a new floor structure with the highest level of heavy impact sound reduction effect in Korea.

Floor impact noise is divided into two types: heavy impact noise caused by the dropping of heavy objects and light impact noise caused by the dropping of light objects. Among these, heavy impact noise is considered the main cause of inter-floor noise in most apartment buildings currently.

The floor structure developed by SK Ecoplant reduced heavy impact noise by up to 41dB according to test results from the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) accredited testing institution. After checking 11 accredited testing institutions capable of measuring inter-floor noise performance, it was confirmed that the heavy impact noise measured on-site was the highest level in Korea. Light impact noise was also reduced by up to 26dB.

The newly developed floor structure was performance-tested by applying it not in a separate laboratory but at an actual apartment site located in Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do. The design was specialized into a column-wall mixed structure instead of the existing wall-type structure, and the thickness of the floor slab was increased by 90mm compared to before. A floating floor structure (50mm vibration isolator + 100mm concrete) was added between the existing slab and the ondol (underfloor heating) structure, reducing vibrations transmitted to the floor and absorbing noise, enabling more efficient noise reduction.

Kim Jung-seok, Head of the Eco Space Division at SK Ecoplant, said, “We have achieved meaningful results in solving inter-floor noise, a major social issue in apartment buildings recently,” and added, “We plan to continue various research and development efforts to develop residential products that meet customer needs.”
