Samsung Choi Si-young, Head of Foundry, "Ready to Respond to Any Challenge"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Choi Siyoung, President of Samsung Electronics Foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) Division, said at a global semiconductor conference, "Samsung's foundry vision is to provide customers with process and design flexibility based on technological competitiveness," adding, "We are ready to respond to any challenge."
President Choi made these remarks during a keynote speech titled "Challenges of the Pandemic, Technology Provides the Answer" at the 'VLSI Symposium' held online on the 16th. The VLSI Symposium is one of the world's top three semiconductor conferences, and it has been about three years since a Samsung Electronics Foundry Division executive delivered a keynote speech at one of the top three conferences, the last being at the 2018 IEDM conference.
In his keynote, President Choi mentioned the 'Multi-Bridge Channel Field Effect Transistor (MBCFET)' technology developed by Samsung Electronics Foundry Division. MBCFET is Samsung's proprietary next-generation transistor process technology that stacks nanosheets shaped like thin, long sheets of paper to enhance transistor performance and power efficiency. Samsung expects the MBCFET process to reduce the space occupied by the existing 7-nanometer FinFET transistor by about 45%, while achieving a 50% reduction in power consumption and a 35% improvement in performance.
President Choi stated, "Just as FinFET technology opened the era of mobile system-on-chip, MBCFET technology is expected to open a 'data-driven society' through high-performance, low-power computing, artificial intelligence, and accelerated 5G proliferation."
