Head of UK Cyber Intelligence Agency: "Ransomware is the Core Threat"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] The head of the Cybersecurity Center under the United Kingdom Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) has identified nation-state ransomware attacks as the greatest threat in cyberspace.
Lindy Cameron, Director of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) under GCHQ, warned on the 13th (local time) that "ransomware is becoming increasingly sophisticated" and cautioned about cyber threats conducted at the national level.
Speaking as a lecturer at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) on the same day, Director Cameron stated, "Ransomware attackers do not operate alone," adding, "They are activated and facilitated by the states hiding behind them."
This statement comes amid recent ransomware attacks that halted the United States' largest pipeline operator, Colonial Pipeline, and the world's largest meat processing company, JBS, with the U.S. attributing these incidents to hackers based in Russia.
In March, Director Cameron also designated Russia as the "most urgent and direct threat" to the UK. At that time, he mentioned Russia along with China, North Korea, and Iran as cyber threat nations.
He said that while Russia poses the most direct threat to the UK, China's size, technological dominance, and ambitions represent an even greater problem, and that they are also monitoring these countries closely.
On the same day, the Group of Seven (G7) leaders, during their three-day summit held in Cornwall, UK, agreed to hold Russia accountable for ransomware attacks linked to Russian hacker groups that occurred in the United States and other countries.
