"G7 to Announce Vaccine Donations Tomorrow"
Pfizer CEO "2 Billion Doses to Be Provided to Low-Income Countries Within 18 Months"
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Joe Biden officially announced a plan to donate 500 million doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to low-income countries.
On the 10th (local time), while visiting the UK to attend the Group of Seven (G7) summit, President Biden said, "The United States will purchase 500 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine and donate them to over 100 countries."
He emphasized that 200 million doses will be delivered this year and that the vaccines are being provided to save lives without expecting anything in return.
President Biden stated, "This is a monumental commitment from the American people. Together with partner countries, we will help the world end this pandemic."
He also announced that G7 countries will reveal their vaccine donation plans on the 11th.
Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer, who joined the announcement, said, "The goal is to provide 2 billion doses of the vaccine to low- and middle-income countries within the next 18 months."
The White House and senior officials emphasized that the vaccines provided by the U.S. are developed by American pharmaceutical companies and made by Americans.
Instead of waiving vaccine patents, it is interpreted that the U.S. government intends to purchase vaccines to create jobs and contribute to improving global health conditions.
