Renault Sued by French Prosecutors Over Diesel Emission Manipulation... Renault Denies Any Manipulation
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Renault announced on the 8th (local time) that it has been ordered by French authorities to pay a 20 million euro bail in connection with allegations of diesel vehicle emissions manipulation. It also added that it has been ordered to deposit 60 million euros in a bank as compensation to prepare for future losses related to aging diesel vehicles.
Bloomberg reported on the same day that the French prosecution has indicted Renault on charges of manipulating diesel vehicle emissions. Renault also confirmed the indictment from the court and made this announcement.
However, Renault expressed its innocence, stating that there was no manipulation related to diesel vehicle emissions. Renault claimed that it has always complied with French and EU regulations.
Following the 2015 diesel vehicle emissions manipulation scandal involving Germany's Volkswagen, known as "Dieselgate," Renault was also investigated by French authorities.
The French prosecution began investigating whether Renault, Peugeot Citro?n, and others manipulated diesel vehicle emissions from early 2017. In 2019, a report was released confirming that some models emitted nitrogen oxides at levels ten times the standard. The French prosecution is also known to be continuing investigations into Volkswagen, Peugeot Citro?n, and Fiat Chrysler.
Volkswagen admitted to manipulating diesel vehicle exhaust systems to pass air pollutant emission tests. Including fines and other costs, it has spent more than 32 billion euros related to this issue.
